Mobilisation & Uniforms

At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, millions of French men were quickly mobilised to serve in the armed forces. The poilus were issued the iconic horizon-blue uniform, which replaced the traditional bright red and blue uniforms used before the war. The uniform was designed to provide better camouflage in the trenches.
